A Mother explores the emotional complexity of motherhood, particularly the
feeling of not being prepared for the overwhelming responsibility it entails.
The piece was created in my early 20s and reflects my journey toward
understanding, accepting, and embracing motherhood. The photograph
represents my experience as a mother, while the accompanying Arabic text
conveys my internal thoughts: “I became a mother. I was not ready, but I will
try because she is my daughter, my heart and soul, safety and security… I
am a mother.”
Inspired by Shirin Neshat’s Unveiling (1993) and Sophia Al Maria’s Sisters
Series (2016), this artwork grapples with the intersection of personal growth,
identity, and the sense of duty that comes with parenthood. The work
encapsulates the vulnerability and the strength inherent in this life-changing
role.
